Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 slated for early 2005 release

September 20, 2004 - Adobe plans to roll-out the second version of its Creative Suite bundle in early 2005, documents obtained by Think Secret reveal. According to sources, Creative Suite 2.0, code-named Cookie Dough, will adhere to Adobe's 12-18 month refresh schedule for its flagship application suite.
Creative Suite 2.0 will include a new version of Illustrator (presumably 12.0, but possibly 11.5 ) code-named Zodiac, a new version of Photoshop (again, likely 9.0, but possibly 8.5) code-named Space Monkey, a new version of InDesign (either 4.0 or 3.5) code-named FireDrake, and GoLive 8.0, code-named Reloaded. It's unclear at this point whether Adobe plans to tie Acrobat 7.0, code-named Vegas, into the CS suite or will keep it largely as a stand-alone product included with CS Premium. Sources indicate that Acrobat 7.0 is separately slated for release by year's end.
"This is part of the calendar-driven upgrade cycle, as opposed to the feature-driven cycle," one source commented, regarding Creative Suite 2.0. "It's like printing money, regardless of the quality of new features, or lack thereof."
Adobe came under fire from some users who found the original Creative Suite to be lacking, especially with Illustrator and Photoshop, the Suite's cornerstone applications, which saw relatively small improvements over previous point-zero upgrades.
For its part, sources say Adobe would like to see all four major Creative Suite applications upgraded at the same time, although it may take a few revisions before development cycles between the applications start clicking. Nevertheless, with shareholders seeking appeasement as much as customers, Adobe is committed to delivering Creative Suite 2.0 in early 2005. This strategy could potentially back-fire, however--competitor Macromedia saw its shares plummet nearly 30 percent late last year on reports that Studio MX 2004, its bundle of creative applications, was missing sales expectations.
Details regarding specific new features in Creative Suite 2.0 are very limited at this point. A new stand-alone application, code-named Bifrost, will debut with Creative Suite 2.0 and aims to serve as a more robust stand-alone version of the Adobe Version Cue system, combining all documents and associated applications into a single central screen similar to the Photoshop CS File Browser.
