Registering .EU-domain names begins 7 December
A pre-registration of a .eu domain name is not yet a binding registration. We are currently still waiting for the precise rules. As soon as we have these we will contact all who have pre-registered .eu domain names with us so that you can decide whether you want to continue and apply for the domain name or not. Those who are allowed to register .eu domain names are:
- All companies, organizations and public authorities who have office or their administration within a country that is a part EU
- All private persons who live within EU

Note that you may register as many .eu domain names that you wish!

The latest news about .EU (10/6/2005)
The timetable is beginning to take shape but we are still waiting for the precise date for Sunrise 1 to begin. The registration process is divided into 3 different phases.

Sunrise 1 (priority group 1) – Registration begins 7 December, 2005
During this group, public authorities, public institutions and owners of trademarks may apply for domain names. These may apply for domain names with priority and domain names will start to get registered sometime during October 2005. In order to apply for a domain name during this phase a special validation fee will be charged. The exact amount has not yet been decided but is believed to be around 1000 Swedish Kronor (SEK) per domain name in addition to the registration fee. When the domain name is applied for the applicant will be asked to send in documents in order to verify the applicants’ priority right to the domain name where after the application will be validated. Assignment of domain names during this period is expected to take several months due to the validation process involved and the all applications are expected to be processed completely first in the beginning of 2006. Sunrise 1 is expected to begin sometime in October 2005.

Sunrise 2 (priority group 2) – Registration begins 7 February, 2006
In this group owners of “other rights” may apply for domain names. We are still waiting for a definition on what “other rights” mean but we suspect that it will be possible to apply for domain names regarding surnames and company names during this phase. Hopefully owners of Swedish domain names (.se) will be able to apply for the same domain name under .eu during this phase. Also during this phase a validation fee is required in order to apply for a domain name, a fee that has not yet been specified. Assignment of domain names during this period is expected to take time and to be completed first in February 2006. Applications for sunrise 2 will begin to be processed first 2 months after sunrise 1 began, probably during December.

“First come first server” – Registration begins 7 April, 2006
This phase will receive the largest amount of applications. The processing of applications will begin first 2 months after sunrise 2 began. You will not have to pay a validation fee in order to apply for domain names. You will receive a result for your application a couple of hours after having applied for it, whether you’ve been assigned the domain name or not.

Prices
The registration fee for a .eu domain name is 950 SEK for every domain name registered and the annual fee is 275 SEK. As a Swede you will receive a Swedish invoice which means that you will not be forced to pay with your credit card over the Internet.

About the validation
If you apply for a domain name during sunrise 1 or sunrise 2 your application must be validated. As soon as the sunrise period has started and we have sent your application to the registry you will receive an e-mail asking you to send specific documents to the validation agent for them to revise. These documents must be sent to the validation agent within a specified time. Validation will be handled by Price Waterhouse Coopers and for their work a fee will be charged. Precisely which documents and how the validation process will work have not yet been announced.

What happens next?
We continue to receive pre-registrations of .eu domain names through our homepage until we have received all the rules.

When the rules and regulations are established we will summarize all the information and make sure that all our customers are informed of this. The information will be sent on paper via snail mail and will include rules, prices, routines, important dates and time frames.

Along with this information we will also send out a list of all the .eu domain names that you have pre-registered. For each domain name in the list you must choose one of the following four alternatives.

- The domain name is to be registered during Sunrise period 1
- The domain name is to be registered during Sunrise period 2
- The domain name is to be registered according to “first come first serve”
- The domain name is not to be registered

The document must then be signed and sent back to us. There after the registration process will continue and we will inform you regularly regarding your status.

The European Union expects a surge of applications next week when its ".eu" regional domain name opens for registration.

"I expect a real rush, several hundred thousand in the first few days," EU Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding told reporters Thursday. "European companies should waste no time and register for the new `.eu' domain name."

Reding and other supporters believe such a domain will help promote European identity and create greater visibility for pan-European e-commerce. Currently, businesses must use domains for their particular country, such as ".fr" for France, or a global one like ".com," which is seen by some as mostly a U.S. suffix.

Registration for ".eu" names begins on Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. GMT, and such names can be used immediately.

For the first two months, only certain rights holders such as registered trademark owners, public bodies and companies can register. On Feb. 2, ".eu" opens up to family names. General registration begins April 7 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Reding said the restricted periods were needed "to reduce considerably the risk of cyber-squatting" — the illicit use of domain names for fraudulent use.

Such periods, known as sunrise, are typical these days as new domains get introduced.

The ".eu" domain name will be run by EURid, a private European nonprofit group. About 750 licensed resellers will accept registrations on EURid's behalf.

Registrations are limited to people who live in the EU and to companies with headquarters or branches inside the 25-nation bloc.

Prices are expected to range from euro80 to euro140 ($94 to $164) during the sunrise periods. They should drop to euro25 to euro30 ($29 to $35) once regular registration begins.

There are about 250 domain names on the Internet, but they are typically assigned by country or territory.

The Internet's key oversight agency, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, made an exception because EU is on a special "reserved" list kept by the International Organization for Standards, a worldwide standardization body.

ICANN also is considering a ".asia" name for that continent.
