Another week and another Windows 7 leak. Last week 7137 leaked and this week it is 7201's turn.

This time around the build tag is 7201.0.winmain_win7ids_sp.090601-2255 meaning this build is only 3 days old. As ever the build is available at the usual places.

Microsoft Netherlands employee Ruud de Jonge twittered "Installing Win 7 build 7201" a few moments ago to confirm the builds authenticity.

Microsoft revealed yesterday that it will sign off final RTM code in mid to late July with a general availability and release date of 22nd October for Windows 7.

It's funny watching people call it "pre-rtm", "RC1 retest" and "RC2" when really you have no idea what it is (no offence). It's this misinformation that creates all these threads and confusion, call it what you will but it's a milestone build (due to the branch and build jump) and is an IDX build.

The IDX Client and Server builds are to help with final pre-deployment testing. They will be distributed to TAP and OEM customers via Connect, similar to the bi-weekly RRP audience. Timebomb behavior identical to RC. Limited servicing. Will reuse RC EULA. Same languages as RC Exit (EN,DE,ES,FR,JA)."

In addition there will be a Client SP released to a limited set of TechBeta participants (delivery via WU). SP will be based off the RC build and will go to a limited audience but not necessarily under NDA. It will be a .CAB file that installs on the RC build; WU detection dependent on a reg key available from the TechBeta site. the SP is edition-agnostic - it would install on either Server or Client, but Server will be turned off for this release. Sensitive Asset test pass will be dependent on whether any SA compo-nents were touched (TBD).

This milestone is termed the "Internal Developer Client and Server" (IDX) build - it's an internal quality term we use meaning that the build is stable enough to deploy and evaluate, but may contain more minor bugs than a RC build.

Once 7 has RTM'd there will still be bugs and some that are so minor that MS will fix them with hotfixes later and into the SP phase. Full servicing starts as soon as RTM has finished and it moves onto hotfixes and SP builds, work is never complete.
