"More significant changes made by Microsoft relate to the kernel and file system. Windows 6.0 will finally support 64-bit processors such as Intel's Itanium II or AMD's Opteron and will also allow server clustering. As with .NET, compilation takes place during installation to ensure that it is fully aligned with the processor architecture. However, this feature is not yet supported, so processors will have to run in 32-bit mode at first.
The new file system, Windows Future Storage (WinFS), which is based on SQL Server 2003 (codenamed Yukon), looks very promising. Those familiar with Structured Query Language will appreciate the powerful search functions that this database system offers. Data such as contacts, email messages and Office documents will no longer be stored as individual files, but will be cross-referenced accordingly. This will allow for complex file searches -- a feature that doesn't exist on current operating systems -- or at least not to the same degree. Longhorn's new WinFS file system is included in the alpha build 3683, although the services are not functional yet. A number of SQL features are already running, but these cause substantial performance degradation since the data needs to be processed using NTFS.
