ja iskreno bas i nisam skontao
da li to znaci da osx nece vise biti unix ?
Zar on prenma bsd-u nema obavezu da izda source code ako ga zatvara?
i sta ako nema unixa ce biti u sistemu 10.5.0

Eto šta može jedna "bombastična", a pri tome par meseci stara, vest da uradi. B)

Niti je Darwin mrtav, niti Apple menja UNIX. Šta se tačno dogoilo?

Apple jednostavno nije postavio kompletan source kod kernela za Intel build Darwina i odmah su se javili "uvređeni" patcheri istog (u cilju lakšeg razbijanja zaštite da se Mac OS X ne može instalirati na mašine koje on ne proizvodi).

Razloga može da bude nekoliko, ali je meni najverovatniji onaj koji se može pročitati na Webu ako se dovoljno pretraži isti, a ne kao autori ovakvih članaka koji jedan za drugim ponavljaju pogrešno protumačenu nazovi vest.

Jedan je, po meni, najlogičniji. Tiger jednostavno nije predviđen da bude u potunosti Universal binary i u Appleu verovatno imaju poseban build za Intel koji nisu hteli da postavljaju na Opensource stranu kada će ionako za koji mesec da postave Leopard. Ušteda u vremenu ažuriranja tog dela i slično.

Jedino sam pogrešio da će čekati Leopard za ovo. Međutim, pošto je sada u potpunosti završena tranzicija na Intel, više nema šta da se čeka, 10.4.7 kernel se može preuzeti sa Appleovog OpenSource sajta.

Apple opens Tiger Darwin kernel

Apple has released buildable Darwin/Mac OS X kernel source code for Mac OS X 10.4.7, following rumors that the company was shying away from the open-source movement. "As of today, we are posting buildable kernel sources for Intel-based Macs alongside the usual PowerPC (and other Intel) sources, starting with Mac OS X 10.4.7," said Ernest Prabhakar, open-source product manager for Apple. "We regret the delay in readying the new kernel for release, and thank you for your patience." the Cupertino-based company has also launched Mac OS Forge -- a new community site to support WebKit and other open-source projects focused on Mac OS X -- specifically aimed at those looking to transition from Opendarwin.org, which closed down in late July.
Apple is also encouraging community participation with a new open-source calendaring server, releasing source code to the new iCal Server in Leopard Server on Mac OS Forge under the Apache License. Additionally, to further enable and encourage cross-platform adoption, the company is re-releasing APSL sources for Bonjour service discovery and Launchd process management under the Apache License hosted on Mac OS Forge.

"Apple is more excited than ever about the power of Open Source development to create value for our (and your) products and customers," said Prabhakar. "I'll be offline much of this week due to WWDC, but I look forward to working with all of you as we move forward to Leopard."

Možda i jedno dodatno objašnjenje zašto je isti prvo bio povučen pa sada vraćen: Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 je Universal Binary. Dakle, možda se i na to čekalo da bi ponovo postavili source kernela na svoju opensource stranu.

Apple has released the source into the wild under the Apache 2.0 license, an interesting and rather nifty little open source animal. If you're unfamiliar with the terms, I highly recommend a little read-up on it at the Open Source website. But the gist of it is that you are allowed to modify code and copyright particular modifications as your own, so long as you allow the modifications to be freely distributed for this particular use alone. This is different than several other licenses, where once you release your own changes you've given them freely to the world.

The announcement comes in conjunction with Apple's developer conference (WWDC). Along with the kernel, the company has released source for iCal, Bonjour, and Launchd. iCal will now be developed solely within MacOS Forge, though the other programs are being updated for Leopard via closed source. There's only one catch - source code for drivers has not yet been released, and if any will be at all is still under speculation. Of course, since the kernel is now open source, driver development from homebrew users will probably be very quick, and likely encompass considerably more hardware than Apple originally intended.

Apple is clearly making a statement by opening up its kernel for all to see, but it is also a pretty slick feature-building move. By examining the modifications people do with Tiger's code, Apple can make some last-minute additions to Leopard before release. The creation of MacOS-Forge also provides a nice way to gain multi-platform acceptance, as Mac programs get ported to other OS's, and programmers learn how to port other programs to run with the OS-X kernel.

It's a nice move, though it unfortunately does not have the breadth of something like Vista's public beta...Macs are already only a tiny fraction of the computer population, and this now requires that the contributors understand programming for them before they can offer anything of substance. Still, it is definitely a positive step for the operating system, which has previously been one of the most clandestine pieces of code in existence.

Kao prvo, da si koristio pretragu video bi da smo o ovome već pričali. Kao drugo, to nije ništa novo, Mac OS X, tačnije njegova osnova, je open source od početka, znači nekih pet i kusur godina.
