According to the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, the fire occurred on July 1 in Osaka Prefecture, when a user was listening to music on an iPod nano -- the MA099J/A model -- while charging it. The device reportedly gave off an explosion-like sound and sparks, which burned the bedding and part of the carpet in a room. There were no reports of injuries.
Apart from the MA099J/A model, a series of similar accidents with three other models -- the MA004J/A, MA005J/A and MA107J/A -- has been reported since September 2005.
Apple Inc. is warning users of the risks with the use of the four "first-generation" models, which sold about 1.81 million units in total between September 2005 and September 2006. The computing giant, however, has not recalled any of the products.
