Consider the numbers of businesses and organizations camping out on SAP alone. There are over 40,000 installations running SAP around the world. In serving that spread, SAP survives by being platform-neutral. SAP marketeers are quick to assure the world (and Open magazine) that they support whatever their customers want them to support—NT, Solaris, HP-UX included.
But SAP’s teaming up with SuSE and IBM to promote a SAP-on-Linux recipe is looking as if it could engender a rising tide of SAP users challenged by demanding environments with high data volumes. They are looking for better computing designs without heavy computing investments. For the so-called mission-critical customers—in any vertical requiring 24 X 7 availability—one recipe that works is SuSE Linux, SAP R/3, and mySAP, served by IBM’s eServer zSeries.

Linux on the zSeries allows customers to consolidate multiple SAP systems onto one hardware platform. The consolidation simplifies systems management and allows high-speed database access. The mainframe can create as few as 20 and up to thousands of virtual Linux servers on a single physical box.
Austria’s OMV has taken this recipe on. OMV, a petroleum and natural gas leader in central and eastern Europe, is consolidating over two dozen SAP R/3 systems that have been implemented on various platforms to a single SAP environment, using mySAP with Linux and IBM’s zSeries mainframe. OMV finds that the advantage of consolidating in this way is gaining better than ever capabilities to manage large volumes of data at highest availability levels.
“We have about 28 SAP applications,” Walter Rotter, IT Manager at OMV, tells Open magazine. The applications include SAP for production, SAP for system development, and SAP systems specifically for Eastern European subsidiaries. Rotter says that the numbers of applications will increase even further with the growth of subsidiary refineries. “That total number will go up to 35 in six months.”
Using AIX and NT as application servers, Rotter says that OMV made the decision to move all applications servers over to the mainframe and saw Linux on the mainframe as the ideal solution. “With zSeries' unique resource sharing,” says Rotter, “we eliminated the need for costly hardware, kept in reserve for peak demand.”
Tako da nije bas da se ne koristi linux ;)
