MSc funding available for women on career breaks

The Departments of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London are pleased to announce new funding to enable women on a career break to undertake Masters courses. This initiative is being run with the support of the European Social Fund (ESF) and in collaboration with Equalitec.

The goal of this joint project is to promote best practice in the field of recruitment and retention of women in Information Technology, Electronics and Communications. Successful applicants will have the chance to retrain as IT practitioners, convert to high demand careers in the fast growing discipline of bioinformatics, or improve their skills with advanced studies of cutting-edge areas of computing.

The course fees of successful applicants will be paid jointly by the European Social Fund and Queen Mary. The scheme applies in particular to the following Masters courses:

• MSc Bioinformatics (conversion)
• MSc Computing and Information Systems (conversion)
• MSc Internet Computing
• MSc e-Commerce Engineering
• MSc Information Management
• MSc Intelligent Web Technologies

The Departments have always made a major commitment to supporting talented women through all stages of their career. For example, the Department of Computer Science run a Women in Computing Research project in collaboration with women@CL which provides local, national and international activities for women engaged in computing research and academic leadership.

The college is therefore very pleased to be able to continue this commitment as Vice-Principal for Science and Engineering, Professor Ursula Martin notes: “I am delighted that Queen Mary is part of this very exciting initiative. The IT industry needs all the talented people it can get, and people with a bit more life experience can often bring a refreshingly different view to the development of IT products and services.”

Elizabeth Pollitzer of Equalitec said: “Advances in Information Technology, Electronics and Communications (ITEC) areas are transforming the way we work and live, and are opening up new employment opportunities across many different areas. Women should and must participate in and take advantage of these changes. For women who have taken a career break, ITEC offers new and exciting career pathways for returning to the labour force.”

Normal entry conditions apply. For further information on how to apply for this funding, potential applicants should contact Dr. Elizabeth Pollitzer of Equalitec on [email protected]
